Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. Azithromycin works by killing the bacteria, as it contains macrolide antibiotics.

What is Azithromycin?

Azithromycin treats people who are afflicted with a bacterial infection such as Chlamydia. It belongs to a classification of antibiotics that are called macrolides. These specific drugs are designed to treat bacterial infections. A few popular names are erythromycin, telithromycin and clarithromycin.

What is Azithromycin’s function?

Bacterial infections can target any part of the body which causes a few illnesses to occur to you. Examples of these illnesses are food poisoning, pneumonia and meningitis. Here are the different types of bacterial infections a patient can get:

  • Bacterial skin infections; caused by strains of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus and other organisms.
  • Foodborne bacterial infections; caused by eating raw meat, eggs, fish, poultry and unpasteurized dairy products or unsanitary food handling and preparation.
  • Sexually transmitted bacterial infections; caused by harmful bacteria that can target the reproductive system.

Because Azithromycin belongs to a group of macrolide, it is designed to treat bacterial infections. Specifically, they do their jobs by preventing the bacteria from making proteins that are essential to their survival. Once they’ve been stripped of their proteins, they lose the ability to properly grow, replicate and multiply in terms of numbers. At the end of the day, the bacteria die or are overpowered by the immune system.

Azithromycin mostly targets diseases caused by bacterial infections. This includes chest infections, nose infections, skin infections, ear infections. More specifically, this antibiotic treats pneumonia, sinusitis, Lyme disease and even sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia.

What are the advantages of taking Azithromycin?

Sexually-transmitted diseases can be difficult to detect than other diseases, mostly because people don’t get themselves checked enough. But it’s important for a person to always get themselves checked. Otherwise, the disease can cause severe and permanent damage to a person’s reproductive system if the disease is left untreated. It can lead to more inflammation and even infertility.

Chlamydia is one of the most common STDs out there, making you susceptible to getting it if you’re not careful enough. However, it’s also easy to cure. For people who are currently experiencing symptoms of Chlamydia, they have a few options to turn to.

Azithromycin is one of those options. By following the instructions of the doctor, patients afflicted with Chlamydia or similar diseases can be quickly cured. The treatment itself is simple to follow as you only need to drink Azithromycin on a fixed schedule. Slowly, the bacteria living in your body will die off slowly but surely. Moreover, it’s best to get started on this treatment so that the disease won’t worsen as time goes on.

What are the side-effects of Azithromycin?

Side-effects are common, especially when you’re trying a new drug or a new treatment. In the case of Azithromycin, most of these side-effects come and go. However, if they persist, then you should inform a doctor straight away.

Here is a list of the most common side-effects when taking Azithromycin:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Exhaustion
  • Changes in your sense of taste

Consequently, there have been reports of other serious side-effects. If you experience the following, then don’t wait for the symptoms to go away. Immediately call your doctor ASAP.

  • Chest pains
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Yellowish skin
  • Pale stool with dark pee
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Vertigo
  • Severe stomach pains
  • Diarrhea with blood or mucus

You can also experience an allergic reaction to Azithromycin, such as skin rashes, tightness in the chest or throat and swelling of the face, tongue, lips and throat. If this happens, call emergency services or get yourself rushed to the hospital.

Who can and can’t take Azithromycin?

Adults and children can take Azithromycin to treat their bacterial infections. However, this medication isn’t suitable for some. When consulting a doctor, it’s important to disclose all information, especially if you have:

  • experienced an allergic reaction to certain medication
  • kidney or liver problems
  • heart issues or arrhythmia
  • diarrhea
  • myasthenia gravis
  • diabetes

It’s also important to inform the doctor what you need the Azithromycin for. The dosage of this drug relies on what infection it should treat. When it comes to Chlamydia, patients are expected to drink 1000mg in a single day. The doctor will be able to prescribe you the right dosage of Azithromycin to properly treat the severity of your illness.

How do you take Azithromycin?

Azithromycin capsules are best taken an hour or two hours after a full meal. If you’ve been given tablets or the liquid form, then they can be taken even without eating a meal. You can take Azithromycin with a glass of water as the liquid can taste very bitter.

There are times where you might forget to take a dose. If this happens, take one as soon as you remember. But if it’s already approaching your next dosage, then you just can skip out on the missed dose. It is not recommended to take two dosages at the same time as this might affect the overall effect.

A pamphlet with quick instructions and advice can be found in the patient information leaflet, which you can find in the medication packet.

Is Azithromycin used to treat Chlamydia?

To treat Chlamydia, two common medications are prescribed by doctors. The first one is called Doxycycline while the second is Azithromycin. The difference between the two comes down to the overall effectivity. Both of them treat the same disease by working the same way: synthesizing proteins. Research has pointed to Doxycycline being more effected though it does not fully explain why. Moreover, it has been observed that Doxycycline is effective in treating acne.

At the end of the day, both Azithromycin and Doxycycline have both proven to be very effective in treating Chlamydia. To purchase Azithromycin, you’ll need a prescription given by a doctor.

What is the regular dosage for Azithromycin?

Azithromycin can be available in different strengths and dosages. It can come in 250mg or 500mg per capsule or tablet. Even though it’s mostly used to treat sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, Azithromycin is also effective in treating other bacterial infections since it is an antibiotic in the first place.

For those who are suffering from the symptoms of Chlamydia, they need to take a single dosage of 1000mg for a single day. On the other hand, to treat other illnesses, such as chest or ear infections, Azithromycin is administered over three to five days with a different dosage.

Where do you buy Azithromycin?

You can buy Azithromycin at the local pharmacy. Make sure to bring with you your prescription. However, if you want to buy drugs and medication online, you can book an online consultation and have a doctor prescribe you Azithromycin over the internet.
