Pravastatin belongs to a class of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. It works by blocking an enzyme that is needed by the body to make cholesterol, so this reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
What is Pravastatin?
Pravastatin was approved by the FDA as generic medication for the treatment of dyslipidemia and the prevention of heart attacks and strokes. It is most effective when combined with a healthy diet and exercise to help reduce bad cholesterol. This medicine is classified as “statins” or also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, a class of lipid-lowering medications that reduce illness and mortality in those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. People prescribed with this medicine would notice a significant drop in cholesterol level within 4 weeks.
Pravastatin was developed by Sankyo Co. It was marketed as a generic brand and has been the most prescribed medication in the U.S. in 2017 because it is safe to use and has only rare side effects. Pravachol is the brand name for Pravastatin. If you have a family history of heart disease or a long-term condition of type 1 and 2 diabetes, Pravastatin could be a household name because doctors would often prescribe this medication.
How does Pravastatin work?
When the blood level of cholesterol and fats is low, blood flow increases, and so as the oxygen supply to your heart and brain, preventing the risk of strokes and heart attacks, which is what the Pravastatin do.
It works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the body that could cause blockage to the arteries and prevent normal blood flow to the heart, brain and other parts of the body.
What are the benefits of Pravastatin?
For people with cardiovascular disease and consistently elevated cholesterol, Pravastatin can help the cause of sudden heart attack or stroke. However, doctors are also encouraging patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle by being mindful of what they eat and choosing proper nutrition with a low-cholesterol and a low-sodium diet and plenty of physical exercises.

How do I use Pravastatin?
Pravastatin is sold in tablet form and taken orally usually once each day before or after a meal. Choose the best time or better yet set a repeat alarm to remind you that it is time to take your dose. This way, you can take your medicine at the same time every day. Normally the doctor will provide instruction on how the medicine should be taken. There is also a written direction on the prescription label of the medication. Normally your doctor will prescribe a low dose of pravastatin and gradually increase them, probably once every month. Continue to take Pravastatin even if you are feeling better and you should not abruptly stop taking the medication without informing your doctor.
While on medication, avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Pravastatin will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol if you do not follow a cholesterol-lowering diet plan. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can raise triglyceride levels and may increase your risk of liver damage.
What is the proper dosage of Pravastatin?
Pravastatin is available in low to high dosage. Your doctor will usually start on the lowest dosage and gradually increase them depending on your medical condition.
- Dosage: 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg.
The strength of your dosage will also depend on other factors such as age, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. For instance, the standard initial dose for adults is 40mg per day. Pravastatin may be increased to up to 80mg.
For usual Pediatric Dose:
- Age 8 to 13 years: 20 mg orally once daily
- Age 14 to 18 years: 40 mg orally once daily
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
What are the side effects of Pravastatin?
Pravastatin is prescribed by doctors knowing that there are some side effects. However, the benefit of the medication outweighs the risks of some of these side effects. Patients rarely experience serious side effects in using this medicine.
Some of these rare side effects include:
- Can cause or worsen diabetes
- Muscle pain
- Kidney problem (change in the amount of urine)
- Yellowing of eyes and skin
- Dark urine
- Severe stomach/abdominal pain due to inflammation of the pancreas.

These side effects can happen rarely, but less than 1 in 1,000 people taking pravastatin may have a serious side effect. Generally, Pravastatin is a very safe medicine and it’s unusual to have side effects. However, different statins can still affect people in different ways.
