Sumatriptan is prescribed for acute migraine headaches in adults. It is not used to prevent migraine headaches and is not to be used for the relief of cluster headaches. It belongs to the group of medicines called triptan.

What is Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan refers to a prescription-only medication that treats acute migraine headaches experienced by adults. It belongs to the classification of medications called triptan. It is also classified as a selective serotonin receptor agonist. Take note that it isn’t used to prevent migraine headaches but treats it instead. It doesn’t belong to a group of drugs that offer relief of cluster headaches.

When people take Sumatriptan, they experience immediate relief for their headaches and migraines. This allows them to continue on with their daily activities without being interrupted by pain or discomfort caused by migraines. Despite some people reporting that their headaches didn’t completely disappear, they can still work better because of the immediate relief they feel. Moreover, Sumatriptan is said to relieve other symptoms experienced by individuals. This includes their nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and their need to vomit.

Even though Sumatriptan works as a pain reliever, it’s not an ordinary pain reliever. It won’t soothe other pains that aren’t migraine headaches. This is why Sumatriptan is most suitable for people who experience frequent headaches that don’t go away with acetaminophen, aspirin or other pain relievers.

How does Sumatriptan work?

To understand how Sumatriptan works, one needs to understand how headaches or migraines come to be. Headaches are caused by a number of factors, including emotional, medical, physical and environmental factors. The emotional factors include stress, anxiety or depression. Medical ones stem from high blood pressure or migraines. Physical injuries can also attribute to headaches. Lastly, environmental reasons, such as the weather, can cause a headache.

Overall, there are many types of headaches. However, some of them don’t get fixed with a few painkillers. But because Sumatriptan is a serotonin-1 receptor, it helps to narrow the brain’s blood vessels and stops the pain signals from being sent to the brain. Additionally, this stops the vessels from swelling, which is what causes headaches in the first place. Moreover, Sumatriptan reduces the triggers that accompany headaches as well. This includes stopping the triggers that cause noise or light sensitivity, nausea and vomiting and most importantly, headaches.

Sumatriptan is efficient and effective in relieving individuals of their migraine symptoms. When they feel a headache coming, they can immediately take the drug to stop them from feeling it. It also works even if the headache has already started but the effects may take longer to feel.

What are the advantages of taking Sumatriptan?

In treating headaches, you can immediately jump back into whatever you were doing without any pain or discomfort. This means you can also be more productive in finishing daily activities. The relief one feels from taking the drug helps them become more productive and active in finishing their tasks. Additionally, this drug is effective in reducing the substances in your body that cause these pains in the first place. You can expect less headaches, less vomiting, less nausea and less sensitivity to noise or light.
