Testogel Sachets

Testogel is a medicine containing the male hormone, testosterone, which works to replenish the levels for adult men who don’t naturally produce the correct levels.

What is Testogel?

Testogel is a topical testosterone replacement commonly prescribed for adult male patients, usually when the body does not produce enough level of hormone. It is a colorless, transparent, or slightly opalescent hydroalcoholic gel, containing 1% testosterone that comes in a box that contains 30 single-dose sachets. Each sachet contains 5g of Testogel with 50mg testosterone content.

Testogel requires a prescription from a licensed specialist once testosterone deficiency has been confirmed by clinical features and biochemical tests.

Testogel provides testosterone on every single application in the skin. 10% of the applied dose of testosterone each day is absorbed through blood circulation within 24 hours. The generic name, testosterone was initially approved for medical use in 1939. It is used to treat various health problems caused by a lack of testosterone such as hypogonadism, gender dysphoria, and certain types of breast cancer. In competitive sports, it may also be used to increase athletic performance, although this is discouraged because it is considered unethical and therefore prohibited by most international sports organizations.

How Does Testogel Work?

Testosterone is the active ingredient used in Testogel, which acts the same way as the natural male hormone in the body. The gel works by improving the level of testosterone in the body through skin absorption.

Who Can and Can’t Take Testogel?

Patients with testosterone deficiency and hypogonadism are recommended to use Testogel.

The Hypogonadism must be confirmed by two separate blood testosterone measurements and also include clinical symptoms such as:

  • impotence
  • infertility
  • low libido
  • tiredness
  • depressive moods
  • bone loss caused by low hormone levels
  • regression of masculine characteristics
  • reduced lean body mass
  • inability to have/maintain an erection

Breastfeeding women and children under the age of 18 years are not recommended to use Testogel. Men with breastfeeding partners who are using Testogel must take extra precaution to avoid inadvertent contact of gel on the skin of a breastfeeding woman. But if it’s too late, wash the exposed area of the skin with soap and water as soon as possible.

Patients with allergic reactions to testosterone should not use Testogel. If you already have and you didn’t know that have an allergy to the active ingredient, you should stop using it and consult your physician immediately.

Some of the symptoms of an allergy may include:

  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body
  • rash, itching, or hives on the skin

Patients should not use Testogel if they have or are suspected to have prostate cancer or male breast cancer.

What are the benefits of Testogel?

Testogel controls the production of testosterone, which is the main sex hormone produced by men and is important in the development of the testicles and penis at puberty, as well as producing ‘male characteristics’ of the body, such as facial and body hair.

Testogel helps improve important body functions that testosterone carries out, including regulating sex drive and helping the testes make sperm. Testosterone also plays a role in protein synthesis and regulating the amount of nitrogen, sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and water in urine.

What are the Side-Effects of Testogel?

All medicines have side effects. Most commonly the side effects are minor. Usually, the benefits of taking a medication outweigh the associated side effects. Your doctor would have considered these side effects before starting you on Testogel.

Common side effects of testosterone include acne, swelling, and breast enlargement in men.

Other common side effects are:

  • Headache;
  • Polycythemia;
  • Increased lipids in the blood;
  • Disorders of the prostate;
  • Breast growth;
  • Breast pain;
  • Dizziness;
  • Pins and needles sensation;
  • Memory loss;
  • Hypersensitivity to touch;
  • Mood disorders;
  • Diarrhoea;
  • Hair loss;
  • Skin irritation and dry skin on the applied area (due to the alcohol content of the gel solution);

Serious side effects may include liver toxicity, high blood pressure, and behavioral changes, changes in lipid levels, skin hypersensitivity, stinging, and loss of memory.

How do I apply or use Testogel?

A leaflet for the application instruction is usually enclosed with every box of the medicine. Do not hesitate to ask a doctor or pharmacist for other questions you may have about the product.

Patients are usually instructed to apply the Testogel at the same time every morning over the clean and dry skin of your upper arms or both shoulders. Do not rub it in and avoid application to upper chest, genitals, or abdomen. Once it dries, cover the skin with a clean cloth or shirt. Wait for at least 4 hours before taking a shower or taking a swim upon application.

Make sure that you wash your hands with soap and water after application. If you miss your dose, do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Apply the next dose at the regular time.

Testogel Dosage

Depending on the doctor’s evaluation and prescription, the recommended dose of Testogel is 5g of gel, equivalent to 50mg of testosterone, which is the lowest dose available. The maximum daily dosage is 10g of gel, equivalent to 100mg of testosterone.

 it is unlikely to cause significant harm if you applied too much Testogel than prescribed, but may cause you to develop more frequent or more severe side effects.

Always consult your doctor first before starting on the medication and to monitor your progress and ensure that you are taking the right treatment and dosage. The treatment effects vary on the patient’s response to medication. Improvement of symptoms can be observed after 3 months of medication. Others may take longer between 6 – 12 months.
