Zopiclone is a prescription only medication, a sleeping tablet that is widely used to treat severe bouts of insomnia among sufferers. If you do not have a prescription, our online doctor service can help.

What is Zopiclone?

Zopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic drug that requires a prescription. It is commonly taken to tend to sore outbursts, especially for people who experience insomnia. If you happen to suffer difficulty in sleeping and don’t have a prescription, seek a doctor for help.

How does Zopiclone work and how do you take it?

This sleeping tablet boosts the effectiveness of a chemical found in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA hinders transmission across nerves in the brain and induces a calming effect. By improving the efficacy of GABA, zopiclone improves sleep.

Zopiclone is available in a tablet form, but it is also available in liquid form for people who find swallowing pills difficult. A tablet can be taken as a whole, followed by a glass of water. You can take it even if you haven’t eaten a meal. However, do not crush, break, or chew it.

Zopiclone takes around an hour to take effect. If you fail to take your dose before bedtime, start the next night again. It is crucial not to take two doses at the same time. Don’t take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you accidentally have taken more than the prescribed dose, call your doctor right away for advice.

How strong is Zopiclone?

Zopiclone varies in two strengths: 3.75 mg and 7.5 mg. The doctor will prescribe the appropriate strength, depending on the severity of your situation. If you are over the age of 65 years old or you currently suffer from kidney or liver problems, a lower dose of 3.75 mg may be recommended. In cases like this, a lower dosage can lower the possibility of uncontrolled sleepiness and other possible side effects.

To prevent your body from becoming dependent on the drug, you may be recommended only to take a tablet 2 or 3 times a week. Zopiclone is usually recommended for just 2 to 4 weeks. This is because your body can get used to, and after the prescribed weeks, it’s improbable to exhibit the same effect.

Who can and can’t take zopiclone?

Only adults over the age of 18 can take zopiclone. After all, Zopiclone is not suitable for some people. To make sure zopiclone is safe for you to consume, here a couple of things you need to tell your doctor:

  1. If you have had an allergic reaction to zopiclone or any other medicine in the past.
  2. If you currently have liver or kidney problems,
  3. If you have an illness that causes muscle weakness and breathing difficulties
  4. If you have a history of mental health problems, issues with alcohol or drug abuse.
  5. If you’re trying to get pregnant, or already pregnant, or breastfeeding.

What are the benefits and side effects of taking Zopiclone?

A person with sleeping problems may have tendencies of waking up too early. This can lead to results like day time sleepiness and inactivity, a feeling of being mentally unwell, mood changes, irritability, and anxiety. These issues can help cause insomnia.

Insomnia also plays a role in occurrences of persistent diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and depression. It can also compromise school and work productivity and curb one’s ability to perform daily activities.

Zopiclone, or as it called by the brand name Zimovane®, enables your body to rest in the hours it needs with fewer or no negative effects endured from the lack of sleep.  It is also a short-term relief to treat difficulties associated with psychiatric disturbances.

Common side effects such as metallic taste or bitter taste in your mouth happen in 1 in 100 people. If you can taste a metallic or bitter taste in your mouth, try taking sips of water or keep a glass of water by your bed at night. If you wake up in the middle of the night with a dry throat, you can soothe it with water. Using a mouthwash is also good for dry mouth before going to sleep. If these side effects don’t go away or bother you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Serious side effects such as memory loss, hallucinations, balance problems (especially if you’re elderly), mood changes, and delusions are rare. If any of these grim side effects persist, call your doctor as soon as possible.

Also, in rare cases, severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis to zopiclone is possible.

If any of these are occurring:  skin rash that may include red, itchy, swollen, blisters or peeling skin; wheezing, difficulty in breathing or talking, and swelling of areas such as mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat, call A&E or the local emergency hotline immediately.

What are the effects of Zopiclone on pregnancy and breastfeeding?

The intake of zopiclone during pregnancy may harm the developing baby. It can also produce a higher risk of side effects in newborn babies. Some researched-backed evidence shows that zopiclone can increase your risk of having a baby born before it is fully developed. Thus the baby may have an increased chance of having lower birth weight. Taking the tablet right up to labor can also raise the likelihood of the baby having withdrawal symptoms at birth.

Zopiclone can pass into breast milk in small amounts. If you have to take zopiclone, consult your doctor or midwife about feeding options.

What are the effects of Zopiclone with other medicines?

Some medicines conflict with each other when they’re taken at the same time. This also raises the chances of experiencing unwanted side effects. Taking zopiclone with other certain medications can increase the drowsy-making effects of zopiclone. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist before starting on zopiclone if you are currently on these following medications:

  •     Medicines to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  •     Medicines to treat depression
  •     Medicines for epilepsy
  •     Medicines to calm or reduce anxiety, or other drugs to treat sleep problems

  •     Strong painkillers
  •     Erythromycin, clarithromycin or any antibiotics used to treat infections
  •     Medicines used to treat fungal infections
  •     Medicines used to treat HIV such us Ritonavir

It is also not recommended to take any herbal remedies that make you feel drowsy or sleepy while taking zopiclone. It can increase the sedating effects of your medicine. If you’re taking any other medications like herbal remedies, vitamins or supplements, inform your doctor or pharmacist.

Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic drug used to tend to sleep problems in adults. This drug belongs to the group called sedative-hypnotics, which functions in the brain to produce a calming effect. It is usually prescribed for one week or two.

In contrast, Zopiclone is also a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic drug used as a sleeping pill to remedy insomnia.

These drugs are both nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic drugs and overall work almost the same. Still, a double-blind comparative study of the two drugs to treat chronic primary insomnia was done. It presented that zolpidem was no less than as effective as zopiclone, and a remarkable less rebound of insomnia on one has stopped the usage of the drug and was tolerated better.

  1. What are other alternatives you can do to help beat insomnia?

Some other methods can assist in treating insomnia, such as trying to stick to a regular sleeping schedule, relaxing before going to bed, taking a warm bath, or listening to soothing music. Using curtains, or blinds, or an eye mask or earplugs can help stop being abruptly awoken by distractions such as noise and light.

Avoid caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, heavy meals, and exercises before going to bed. Avoid exposure to TV or usage of electronic devices such as phones, tablets, or computers just before going to bed. Avoid taking a nap during the day. Write a list of your worries, and any ideas about how to solve them; or a “to-do” can help soothe your mind before bedtime.
